Chiropractic Adjustments (Joint Manipulation or Mobilization)
According to The Association of Chiropractic Colleges, "chiropractic is a health care discipline which emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs or surgery. The practice of chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health." When you have reduced range of motion, you aren't able to function at your full capacity. Chiropractic uses gentle, safe manual application of pressure to re-establish proper joint mobility and improve range of motion and function. Joints with healthy mobility can help you not only feel better but move better through all the activities you participate in! Do you enjoy golfing, working out, paddle boarding, dancing and just being active in general? Then healthy joint movement is important for you! Chiropractic care is not just for people in pain, it's also for those who want to keep living a healthy and active lifestyle. Treatment with a chiropractor can help keep you in the game, on the board, the mat... you get the picture.
Myofascial (Muscle) Treatment Techniques (MRT & Graston)
Muscle moves bones, therefore it is important to treat the muscles and fascia as well as the joints. Fascia is connective tissue that wraps around and connects the various structures in the body (muscles, vessels, nerves and organs). As it pertains to the musculoskeletal system, when there is tissue injury, disuse, or lack of adequate physical activity, the fascia and the underlying muscle tissue may become stuck together, leading to what is referred to as an adhesion. Adhesions may cause restrictions in the movement of muscles and joints, which may manifest as reduced flexibility and pain. The body is healed with scar tissue, this is normal, however this often leads to reduction in mobility if steps aren't taken to restore proper length to the injured area. Myofascial Release Techniques (MRT) aims to release scar tissue and encourage the fibers of muscles and tendons to move freely and stretch to their healthy lengths. Pain is reduced and function improved. Dr. Pierce is also certified to provide instrument assisted soft tissue therapy, to learn more about Graston Technique Click Here.
Acupuncture/Traditional Chinese Medicine and Trigger Point Dry Needling in Newport Beach
Acupuncture and TCM can help those suffering from back pain, headaches, TMJ dysfunction, menstrual cramps, stress, carpal tunnel syndrome and so much more! This safe and effective treatment has helped millions of people without harmful side effects for thousands of years. Alone, or in combination with Chiropractic treatment, your body can heal itself without dangerous drugs or procedures. Small (very thin) needles are placed into various acupoints on the body to aid the circulation or blood and "Qi" in the treated region and throughout the body. Cupping or Electroacupuncture may also be used to enhance treatment effects. Dr. Pierce may also prescribe herbal medicines depending on your ailment.
Trigger Point Dry Needling is a treatment technique where thin filiform needles are inserted through the skin into pathological areas of the muscle known as "trigger points" for the purpose of relieving myofascial pain and muscle spasm. These are the same needles used in traditional acupuncture therapy, they are solid rather than hollow, and no medication is injected. Dry needling is used in conjunction with other manual therapy techniques and therapeutic exercise.
When performing dry needling, there may be a "twitch response" where the specific band of muscle involuntarily contracts in response to insertion of the needle. Beneficial effects can occur without elicitation of the twitch response. Sometimes electrotherapy is also applied with the trigger point needling technique, this is referred to as electroacupuncture. If electroacupuncture is considered appropriate, small clips are attached to specific needling locations and a mild electrical current is applied. Electrical muscle stimulation aids in stimulating blood flow, reducing pain and relieving muscular spasm.
Muscle Cupping / Myofascial Decompression Therapy
Cupping has been used for centuries by the ancient Chinese medicine community to encourage blood circulation and relieve pain. Benefits of cupping include increased blood flow, muscular pain relief and improved circulation. As opposed to massage, cupping lifts up and separates the layers of muscle and fascia rather than compressing them together. As the practitioner moves the cups over the surface of the skin (much like a massage, and sometimes incorporating movement) muscle tension is released and circulation is improved to facilitate healing. At our Newport Beach office, cupping is not only combined with acupuncture treatment, it is often used for our chiropractic patients before their spinal or extraspinal adjustments to help the muscles relax before the treatment is delivered! Due to the nature of this treatment there may be some residual marking on the skin, but this dissipates within a couple of days. Sometimes there is no marking at all, depending on the strength of the treatment, which is tailored to the patient.
Therapeutic Exercise and Physiotherapy
Once you are out of pain and moving better you will be prescribed exercises to maintain your results and improve your strength. By retraining the weak muscles after releasing the tight ones, your body will become more balanced and you can remain pain free!
Electrical muscle stimulation, therapeutic ultrasound, Graston Technique, Nutritional Supplements and Kinesiotaping are additional therapeutics that may be included as a part of your treatment. Treatments are tailored to each patient and will progress and change based on your needs.
