Cold and Flu Symptoms? Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs Can Help!

Sneezing, headaches, runny, stuffy noses, sore throats and coughs can sure put you in a bad mood!  The common cold is caused by a virus and antibiotics are ineffective for these types of infections.

So what do you do?  Most people either tough it through the misery or reach for over the counter remedies at the local drug store.

Medications, even if they are over the counter, come with potential harmful side effects.

Did you know that Chinese herbal medicines can help with these symptoms with fewer negative side effects?
These formulations  are made of substances from the Earth, they are natural and effective options for managing those pesky symptoms from your cold.  They are even helpful for allergy symptoms!

Alone or with acupuncture treatment by your Newport Beach acupuncturist, properly prescribed herbal formulas can help you get through the season feeling great!

*It is important to only take herbal prescriptions prescribed by a qualified health care professional. Just because something is natural doesn't mean it isn't potent and potentially harmful if taken inappropriately.

A Delicious Holiday Recipe!!!

Looking for something festive, delicious and healthy to bring to those holiday parties this season?
Poached pear cranberry bliss!

4 servings:

  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 tbsp cranberry jelly
  • 2 tbsp raw sugar (modify to your preference)
  • 2 tea bags (I suggest apple cinnamon flavor)
  • 4 ripe but firm pears, peeled and halved with cores scooped out
  • 1 cup fresh cranberries
Instructions:

1.   Put the sugar, honey, jelly and tea bags into a big saucepan with 600ml water and bring to a  boil, stirring to dissolve the sugar.

2.   Add the pear halves, then cover and simmer for 12-15 mins until the pears are just tender - poke them with a skewer or the tip of a knife.

3.   Lift out the pears, then turn up the heat, throw in the cranberries and boil for a few mins until syrupy. Discard the tea bags.

4.   Serve the pears with the warm syrup poured over and a spoonful of plain or vanilla greek yogurt or ice cream (if you made time for a brisk walk that day!)

Cold and Flu Season is Upon Us!

Are supplements really going to help me?  Vitamins, and for that matter, all supplements are an area of controversy among some groups.  Some people swear by them, while others would argue that all you get with supplements is expensive urine.  So who's right?  The jury is still out on whether whole foods versus supplements are the absolute best ways to get your daily allowances.

One thing is for sure, though.  Most people aren't eating a perfectly balanced diet.  Are you? If you aren't sure, it is a good idea to add a daily multivitamin and mineral supplement.  Adequate vitamin and mineral balance will help your body maintain your immune system and proper inflammatory responses.

One way to test how well absorbed your vitamin is, place one pill in a cup with vinegar and leave overnight.  If it is not dissolved by the morning, chances are you are paying for expensive urine! (Sorry!)

Vitality through more Vitamin D

Most of us don't get adequate amounts of vitamin D because we spend the majority of our day indoors. If you can't get out there and soak up the rays, you may need to take a closer look at your diet...

SUNDAY, Feb. 27 (HealthDay News) -- A new study says it takes far more vitamin D than initially thought to dramatically cut the risk of several major diseases, including breast cancer....

We found that daily intakes of vitamin D by adults in the range of 4,000-8,000 IU are needed to maintain blood levels of vitamin D metabolites in the range needed to reduce by about half the risk of several diseases -- breast cancer, colon cancer, multiple sclerosis and type 1 diabetes," study co-author Dr. Cedric Garland, a professor of family and preventive medicine at the University of California at San Diego, said in a university news release.
