When someone has sciatica, they are experiencing compression of the sciatic nerve, the large nerve that originates from the lumbar spine and travels down through the hip and into the leg.  Symptoms of sciatica may include numbness, tinging, burning, sharp and/or shooting pain into the lower extremity, most often just affecting one side.  The cause of sciatica varies from a herniated disc pushing into a spinal nerve root to muscle(s) in the hip/gluteal region compressing the sciatic nerve. It is important to distinguish the true cause of an individual's sciatica symptoms in order to properly treat it.  The cause of sciatica symptoms can be determined by a thorough examination and history performed by your chiropractor.  Sometimes MRI will be ordered by the chiropractor, but this isn't always necessary.

Many people have experienced significant relieve or complete resolution of their sciatica through chiropractic care! Once the proper diagnosis is made, the chiropractor will use gentle stretching, muscle manipulation and joint mobilization (adjustments) to reduce compression on the sciatic nerve and eliminate pain. Exercises and self stretching may also be prescribed to help the patient avoid future flare ups.

If you or someone you know is suffering with any of the above described symptoms,  chiropractic care and/or acupuncture may be able to help without drugs or surgery!  To find out if chiropractic or acupuncture are right for you, call to set an appointment or schedule online today!
