Acupuncture for Low Back Pain

For thousands of years people have employed acupuncture treatment for their various health concerns.  While there is not a large body of scientific evidence supporting the use of acupuncture and traditional Chinese medicine for many of these conditions, the use of acupuncture for low back pain is promising.

Low back pain affects millions of Americans every year and can range from irritating to outright debilitating.  Many treatment options are available to individuals suffering with low back pain including, but not limited to; medications, physical therapy, chiropractic, exercise, traction devices, injections, surgeries and acupuncture.

While any of the above may be considered viable and appropriate options for the treatment of low back pain, I tend to believe that one should start with the most benign option and move forward from there if necessary... Chiropractic for low back pain is a well-established treatment option sought after by many who suffer with acute or chronic low back pain symptoms. There is a growing body of evidence supporting the use of acupuncture for low back pain, and I for one am thrilled!

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE chiropractic and all I have seen it do for the people I have had the privilege to treat, but sometimes chiropractic is not the answer.  Gasp.

For some post-surgical cases, extremely acute cases or for those who are simply not comfortable with spinal manipulation or not good candidates, acupuncture is a safe, comfortable and effective option.  If more people sought out care from an acupuncturist for their low back pain they may reduce their visits to the emergency department and/or general practitioner and use less medication to combat their pain.  One study's conclusion suggested that patients with low back pain (LBP) were less likely to visit physicians for LBP after acupuncture treatment. This led to reduced health services spending on LBP.  (http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0415641212006054)
